Labour Day in Canada is celebrated the first Monday in September and was originally a day for workers to campaign for better pay or better working conditions.  Today, it is also celebration of accomplishments.

  • On April 15, 1872, 24 members of the illegal Toronto Typographical Union were imprisoned for striking to bring attention to the need for a nine-hour work day.
  • As of May 2013, the minimum wage in the provinces and territories ranged from $9.75/hour in Alberta to $10.54 in the Yukon.
  • 31.5% of Canadian workers belong to a labor union in 2012.
