Labour Day (Canada) History

Labour Day in Canada is celebrated the first Monday in September and was originally a day for workers to campaign for better pay or better working conditions. Today, it is also celebration of accomplishments.

On April 15, 1872, 24 members of the illegal Toronto Typographical Union were imprisoned for striking to bring attention to the need for a nine-hour work day.
As of May 2013, the minimum wage in the provinces and territories ranged from $9.75/hour in Alberta to $10.54 in the Yukon.
31.5% of Canadian workers belong to a labor union in 2012.
